Is finding an "object of common interest" real?

I saw it on wizards of waverly place lol and justin told alex to find an object of common interest to get a guy to like her and then Harper used it on him and they went on a date. I found this to be really helpful. I've made friends and a couple more than friends ;) with this technique. Do people know about it and or use it?
