Taking pictures with a cut out paper doll?

During a tour my husband and I went to I kept seeing a couple taking pictures but every time they would take a picture they would put a small cut out paper shape of a boy doll next to them or whatever they were taking a picture of. I have actually noticed this with other people and even with some famous people on TV, does anyone know why they do this (David Hasselhoff was holding one when taking a picture with his family on the red carpet)? (I didn’t have the guts to ask them why they did this)
